Naira Appreciates To N498/$ As Reserves Hit $28.3bn

Having depreciated in value to N500 to the dollar at the parallel market, the value of the naira appreciated to N498 to the dollar, the value it had been trading for weeks or weeks, even as external reserves rose to $28.28 billion the highest in the year highest in a year. The naira however remained stable at N305.25 to the dollar at the interbank market, on the website of the Association of Bureau de Change Operators; the naira was quoted at N315.38 to the dollar. Demand for the greenback grew and the Central Bank of Nigeria rationed dollar supply, having sold $660 million in 3- and 5- month currency forwards at an auction aimed at clearing a backlog of dollar demand. Traders however said the dollar sale was not enough to satisfy the market. Data on the website of the apex bank showed that the nation’s external reserves has risen by 7.89 per cent since the beginning of the year. Senate approves and Increases Buhari’s virement fund from N180.8bn to N208bn

Nigeria's National Assembly has, Tuesday, approved the virement request by President Muhammadu Buhari which is in the tune of N208.821 billion. This was contained in series of tweets sent by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Nigerian Senate Twitter handle The virement fund explained by the President as ‘critical recurrent and capital items’ is for execution of key infrastructural projects across the country between 2016 and 2018. President Buhari had requested for virement of N180.8 billion in the 2016 budget for provision of needed votes for some sectors as well as to “provide for inadequacy in the provision for the National Youth Service Corps in the 2016 budget’’. However, the House of Representatives increased the virement fund request from N180 billion to N208.821 billion. Mr Bagudu Hirse, former aviation minister, who was abducted by gunmen in Kaduna on Sunday, Nov. 20, has regained his freedom, his brother, Mr John Hirse, has confirmed. “Bagudu was released in the early hours of Saturday,” John, retired permanent secretary in the federal civil service and currently District Head of Mangu, in Plateau, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Jos on Saturday. He said that the former aviation minister is “hale and hearty”, and thanked Nigerians for the prayers and words of encouragement “during the tỳing period”. “May God reward everyone who stood by us during the tough period,” he said. John, however, did not give further details, and also refused to comment on whether a ransom was paid to the abductors. Gunmen, today engaged in a gun duel with security operatives guarding the home of the powerful cousin of President Muhammadu Buhari and abducted Mr.  Hirse. Mr. Daura was shocked by the kidnapping, but left unharmed. Security operatives have subsequently been drafted to protect Mr. Daura's Kaduna residence. Police are yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.

Immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, said it was impossible for the National Security Adviser (NSA) during his administration, Sambo Dasuki, to have stolen $2.2 billion as claimed by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC). Mr. Dasuki, who has been in detention since December 1, 2015, was arrested by security agencies in an early morning raid on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari for the alleged misappropriation of $2.2 billion meant to purchase equipment for the Nigerian military in its battle against Islamist group, Boko Haram. Nigeria Remains Africa's Biggest Economy - October 2016

Nigeria has been affirmed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the biggest economy in Africa — ahead of South Africa and Egypt. In August 2016, Nigeria was reported to have lost its spot as Africa’s biggest economy to South Africa, following the recalculation of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). “A recalculation using current exchange rates put South Africa on top because the rand has strengthened against the dollar,” BBC had said in August. “Based on gross domestic product at the end of 2015 published by the International Monetary Fund, the size of South Africa’s economy is $301 billion at the rand’s current exchange rate, while Nigeria’s GDP is $296 billion,” Bloomberg had also said. But according to TheCable, latest estimates from the IMF however put Nigeria’s GDP at $415.080 billion, from $493.831 billion at the end of 2015. The President just departed for an official visit in Germany, this comes after the release of the Chibok Girls. He was briefed by the Director General of the State Security Service, Mr Daura at the Presidential Villa. After the Commanders of the Islamic Sect, Boko Haram released the girls during a prisoner swap deal, which saw the 21 girls swapped for four battle Commanders of the terrorist group.

President Buhari Appoints New Supreme Court Justices

President Muhammadu Buhari has requested the Senate to consider and confirm the nominations of two judges as Justices of the Supreme Court. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, read the letter conveying the request after the Senate returned from a closed-door session on Tuesday. The nominated judges are Sidi Bage, Nasarawa State, North Central; and Paul Jauro, Taraba State, North East. In the letter read by Mr. Saraki, Mr. Buhari said his request followed Section 231(2) of the Constitution of Nigeria, as amended. The President sought the expeditious attention of the Senate, Mr. Saraki read. Mr. Jauro, who was born on June 26, 1954, became a judge of the High Court in 1998. Ten years afterwards, he was appointed Justice of the Court Appeal. Mr. Bage, born on June 22, 1956, became Federal High Court Judge in 1992 before his appointment as Justice of the Court of Appeal in 2000.
