Police Raid PREMIUM TIMES Head Office; Arrest Publisher Journalist

Th e Nigeria police have raided PREMIUM TIMES head office in Abuja, and arrested the newspaper’s publisher. The publisher, Dapo Olorunyomi, was arrested alongside the paper’s judiciary correspondent, Evelyn Okakwu. Plain-clothed officers conducted a search at the office shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday and said they were acting on a complaint filed by the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai. The arrests came days after PREMIUM TIMES turned down the army’s demand to retract news stories about the Nigerian Army and its operations. The paper’s Editor-in-Chief, Musikilu Mojeed, condemned the raid. “They should stop deluding themselves that they can muzzle the press and intimidate PREMIUM TIMES,” said Mr. Mojeed. “They should know that our loyalty lies with our readers and the Nigerian people who have a right to know.” He said the paper would continue “to discharge its responsibilities in line with global best practices, social responsibility, and patriotism, even at great risk to our per

Chef Of NNPC Managing Director Esther Ogbue Absconds With $6m In Cash And Jewelry

A cook who served Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue, a Managing Director at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Abuja, has absconded with cash and pieces of jewelry worth $6million, a source told SaharaReporters on Wednesday. It was gathered that the man, identified as Gabel Segbedji, a national of Benin Republic, took off with the loot in a Toyota Camry car which also belonged to her boss, last Wednesday. Although reportedly devastated by the development, Mrs. Nnamdi-Ogbue did not report the burglary to the police, in the hope of avoiding further attention, as she is already under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Mrs. Nnamdi Ogbue was the Managing Director of the cash-spinning Petroleum Products and Marketing Company (PPMC) before she was moved to Products Retail by then GMD of NNPC, Ibe Kachikwu, in 2015. The President just departed for an official visit in Germany, this comes after the release of the Chibok Girls. He was briefed by the Director General of the State Security Service, Mr Daura at the Presidential Villa. After the Commanders of the Islamic Sect, Boko Haram released the girls during a prisoner swap deal, which saw the 21 girls swapped for four battle Commanders of the terrorist group.

President Buhari Appoints New Supreme Court Justices

President Muhammadu Buhari has requested the Senate to consider and confirm the nominations of two judges as Justices of the Supreme Court. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, read the letter conveying the request after the Senate returned from a closed-door session on Tuesday. The nominated judges are Sidi Bage, Nasarawa State, North Central; and Paul Jauro, Taraba State, North East. In the letter read by Mr. Saraki, Mr. Buhari said his request followed Section 231(2) of the Constitution of Nigeria, as amended. The President sought the expeditious attention of the Senate, Mr. Saraki read. Mr. Jauro, who was born on June 26, 1954, became a judge of the High Court in 1998. Ten years afterwards, he was appointed Justice of the Court Appeal. Mr. Bage, born on June 22, 1956, became Federal High Court Judge in 1992 before his appointment as Justice of the Court of Appeal in 2000. Yahaya Bello's Election Upheld by Supreme Court

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, had his election upheld moments ago by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. This news follows a protracted political and legal battle for the governorship in Kogi State following the death of gubernatorial candidate Abubakar Audu moments before his confirmation by the Independent National Election Commission (INEC). Our correspondent at the Supreme Court learned that the seven-man panel, lead by Justice Sylvester Nguta, dismissed the appeals filed by the former running mate of Mr. Audu, James Faleke and others. The justices stated that justification for their decision would be provided on September 30th. The court’s decision, which was unanimous, made judicial history because the situation had never been accounted for in existing constitutional laws.

Nigeria's External reserves rise by $595m in five days

The nation’s foreign exchange reserves have increased by $595m to hit a one-month high of $26.196bn, the latest data from the Central Bank of Nigeria have shown. This came on Monday just as the naira traded around 412- 413 against the United States dollar at the parallel market, compared to 414/dollar on Sunday. External reserves stood at $25.6bn as of August 24, down from $26.21bn on July 28, the CBN data showed. The reserves declined from $26bn on August 4, 2016 to $25.97bn on August 5 as the CBN stepped up dollar sales to boost liquidity at the interbank market and support the ailing naira. The central bank has been selling dollars regularly at the interbank market to prop up the naira since it floated it on June 20. The currency touched an all-time low of 365.25 per dollar on August 18 at the official market. In June and July, the reserves hovered between $26.3 and $26.4bn, but fell to $26.12bn on August 1. Aero Contractors Airlines, Nigeria’s second largest commercial carrier, has confirmed the suspension of its scheduled services beginning from Thursday September 1, 2016. Confirming this in a statement signed by the carrier’s management on Wednesday, Aero stated that the suspension was part of the strategic business realignment to reposition the airline and return it to profitability. It stated that this “business decision”, which is a result of the current economic situation in the country, had forced some other airlines to suspend operations or pull out of Nigeria. The management of the carrier said the airline had faced grave challenges in the past six months which impacted its business and by extension the scheduled services operations.
